Prof. Mushemeza Bows to Uganda’s Teachers
I have realized that my words offended many, and I sincerely apologize to all teachers who were hurt.” Prof. Mushemeza
Prof. Elijah Mushemeza, who recently lost the NRM primaries, has come forward with a heartfelt apology to teachers across Uganda following a storm of criticism over past remarks he made about their salaries and strike actions. His earlier comments, which belittled teachers as being "too poor to afford strikes," sparked outrage and resentment within the teaching fraternity, many of whom felt disrespected and devalued.
In
his apology delivered on August 31, 2025, Prof. Mushemeza acknowledged that his
statement was unfortunate and deeply hurtful to many teachers. He explained
that his views had been shaped by his own past experiences at Makerere
University during strike periods, which he described as "expensive and
tiresome to sustain."
"I
am a teacher myself. I have taught at the level of the University and I own
schools that support the teaching profession. I did not intend to hurt
anybody," Mushemeza stated. "I have realized that my words offended
many, and I sincerely apologize to all teachers who were hurt. I also forgive
those who insulted or harassed me on social media in response. I am doing this
in the spirit of reconciliation and integrity to the teaching profession."
Mushemeza’s
defeat in the NRM primaries was met with jubilation among many teachers who saw
it as a symbolic moment of justice. Across social media platforms, educators
openly mocked and celebrated his loss, recalling the sting of his earlier
remarks. For many, the primaries became more than a political contest they
were a moment of vindication for Uganda’s teachers.
His
public apology, however, may open the door to rebuilding his relationship with
the education sector, a profession he claims to deeply value and support.
Whether teachers will fully accept this apology remains to be seen, but his
gesture signals an important step toward healing strained relations.
