Byabakama Admits Error in Kyagulanyi’s Nomination Certificate

Electoral
Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama has admitted to errors in Robert
Kyagulanyi’s nomination certificate, sparking outrage among NUP supporters.
Kyagulanyi,
who had been asked to resubmit signatures from 35 districts, received his
compliance certificate on 22nd September 2025 yet it was dated 19th
September, the same day the EC had rejected his initial submission. The
mix-up fueled claims that the commission deliberately delayed his nomination to
allow President Museveni to go first.
Byabakama
defended the blunder, calling it a “minor typing error” by staff, insisting the
certificate was valid. He stressed that Kyagulanyi initially failed to meet the
required signatures but was later allowed to correct them before being cleared.
On
why nomination dates were shifted, Byabakama said the EC has sole authority to
decide, noting that Museveni and Kyagulanyi could not be nominated on the same
day due to their large crowds.
