Adrine Kobusingye Sweeps NRM Women’s League Chair in Landslide Victory
Adrine Kobusingye has been elected as the new Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League, securing a landslide victory
Kampala,
Uganda – The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has ushered in a new era
of women’s leadership after Adrine Kobusingye was elected Chairperson of the
NRM Women’s League.
Dr.
Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, declared Kobusingye
the winner on Monday after she secured 1,839 votes in a highly contested race.
Her victory marks a decisive shift in the party’s women’s wing, dislodging
veteran politician Lydia Wanyoto, who withdrew from the contest shortly before
voting.
Kobusingye’s
main challenger, Faridah Kimbowa, garnered 670 votes after receiving the
backing of Wanyoto and fellow candidate Kaliisa Kyomukama, who had stepped down
and rallied her delegates in support of Kimbowa. Despite this consolidation of
forces, Kobusingye’s commanding lead proved unassailable.
Other
contenders in the race included Sarah Ochieng, who polled 19 votes, Faridah
Nakalawo with 3 votes, and Rehema Kyanika with 2 votes. The wide margin
cemented Kobusingye as the undisputed choice of delegates, signaling strong
grassroots support and confidence in her leadership.
The
outcome is seen as a generational and strategic shift within the NRM Women’s
League, positioning Kobusingye as a fresh face tasked with mobilizing female
voters and strengthening grassroots structures in the run-up to the 2026
elections.
Her
victory also leaves lingering questions about the political future of Lydia
Wanyoto, who has been a formidable figure in NRM’s women politics for years.
With Kobusingye now at the helm, analysts suggest the Women’s League is poised
for a new chapter in its role within Uganda’s ruling party.
